Maketū Fishing Adventure

Maketū Fishing Adventure – An Authentic Māori Ocean Experience

The Maketū Fishing Adventure by Muirs Tours is far more than a fishing charter—it is a deeply personal cultural and marine experience that combines ocean fishing, Māori storytelling, environmental stewardship, and exceptional local hospitality. Hosted by former New Zealand Māori All Blacks captain Deon Muir, this exclusive excursion offers guests the opportunity to explore the rich waters of Maketū while learning about the traditions, history, and sustainable practices that have shaped the local community for generations. (MUIRS TOURS)

Meet Your Host – Deon Muir

The experience is led by Deon Muir, a former professional rugby player, captain of the New Zealand Māori All Blacks, and former Chiefs captain. Having spent more than 30 years fishing and diving around Maketū, Deon shares his extensive local knowledge while introducing guests to the Māori concept of kaitiakitanga—the responsibility of caring for the environment and marine resources. Fishing in the Bay of Plenty

After a safety briefing, guests board a custom-built Extreme Game King fishing vessel and venture across the Maketū bar into the productive waters of the Bay of Plenty. Throughout the day, Deon teaches fishing strategies, explains local marine ecosystems, and shares stories about the area's cultural and historical significance. (MUIRS TOURS)

Optional Kaimoana Cookout Feast

One of the most popular additions to the fishing adventure is the Kaimoana (seafood) Cookout Experience. After returning to shore, guests gather around a purpose-built outdoor cooking area where the day's catch is transformed into a memorable feast. Highlights may include:

  • Fresh fish and chips prepared from your own catch.

  • Maketū curried mussel chowder.

  • Grilled mussels with a special house sauce.

  • Manuka-smoked fish.

  • Traditional sashimi preparation.

  • Freshly made fried bread and other local specialties. (MUIRS TOURS)

Fishing takes place aboard the No.8 Maketū, a custom-built 6.45m Extreme Game King powered by a 200HP Suzuki engine and equipped with advanced fish-finding technology.
