Journey Through the Rainforest

1. Arrival

Located approximately 15 minutes south of Hokitika, the attraction sits beside the beautiful Mahinapua Scenic Reserve, surrounded by lush West Coast rainforest.

A short walk from the visitor centre leads you to the start of the elevated canopy experience. (West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline)

2. Walk Among the Giants

The elevated steel platform stretches for more than 450 metres, weaving between towering native trees approximately 20 metres above the ground.

Unlike traditional forest walks, you're immersed in the upper canopy where native birds live and ancient branches intertwine overhead.

The walkway gently sways with movement, creating the sensation of walking among the treetops while remaining completely enclosed for safety. (West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline)

Ancient Forest

The surrounding rainforest is dominated by magnificent native species:

  • 🌲 Rimu

  • 🌳 Kamahi

  • 🌿 Kahikatea

  • 🌴 Tree ferns

  • 🍃 Horopito shrubs

Many of the largest trees are estimated to be 200–300 years old, creating a primeval atmosphere often described as resembling a prehistoric forest. (West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline)

Mahinapua Springboard Cantilever

One of the signature features is the cantilever viewing platform, known as the Mahinapua Springboard.

Stepping onto the platform provides:

  • A gentle floating sensation

  • Uninterrupted views over Lake Mahinapua

  • Incredible photo opportunities

  • A unique perspective above the forest canopy

It is one of the most photographed spots along the entire walkway. (West Coast, New Zealand)

Hokitika Tower

The adventure continues with the climb up the spectacular 47-metre Hokitika Tower.

The spiral staircase rises high above the trees to reveal panoramic views across:

🏔️ Snow-capped Southern Alps

💙 Lake Mahinapua

🌊 Tasman Sea coastline

🌲 Endless native rainforest stretching to the horizon

The tower is one of the highest publicly accessible forest viewing structures in New Zealand. (West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline)

Wildlife & Nature

The elevated perspective makes it easier to observe native wildlife, including:

  • 🐦 Bellbirds

  • 🐦 Tūī

  • 🕊️ Kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon)

  • 🦢 White herons (occasionally spotted)

Interpretive signs throughout the walk explain the area's ecology, flora, fauna, and conservation efforts. (West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline)
